Wireless Kit

VoiceAmp have worked in close conjunction with the audiology community to develop an inductive loop (tele-coil) interface for the VA601i. The VA601i loop mic fits into the headset socket and allows the unit to transmit audio wirelessly to a receiver (earpiece). Any receiver with tele-coil functionality can be used. These include:

  • BTE Behind the ear
  • In-The-Ear (ITE)
  • In-The-Canal (ITC)

Opting for the wireless kit ensures the user of a discreet wearing option while retaining the dynamic programmable power of the VA601i device.

How to wear it

Open the Wireless flash bag, note the In-Ear-Receiver is packaged separately and may already be fitted with a battery.

  • Remove the Loop Mic, place it over your head, with the mic facing forward.
  • Connect the Mic to the VA601i headset socket (top or bottom socket).
  • Familiarise yourself with the Volume control, turn the volume knob to its midpoint, this will turn on the receiver on.
  • Fit the receiver into the ear.
  • Set the VA601i volume high (via the keypad). Adjust the receiver volume to a comfortable level.
  • The replacement battery type is Type 10 or Colour coded.
  • The Volume adjuster should be set to the off position when not in use; battery life should be a few weeks (depending on volume setting and usage pattern).
  • Some electrical appliances like mobile phones may interfere with the receiver, if you experience a buzzing noise move away from the appliance.
  • Excessive volume will result is a hissing noise, reduce volume slightly.
  • Use the Control panel tool (software) to reduce ambient level and increase effect volume.

In-The-Ear (ITE) Guidelines

This type of receiver is normally recommended to people wanting additional discreetness. Consideration should be given to their size - they are more difficult to handle than Behind The (BTE) receivers and fitting and removing them for the first time can be fiddly.

Because the electronic components of ITE receiver are inside your ear they are susceptible to damage from ear wax and moisture. You should invest a set of brushes and other tools to help you keep your ITE receiver clean and in good working order, these tools are available at most high street pharmacies.

  • What do I do if there is no sound?

    You could be experiencing too much ear wax. Please consult your doctor

    The hearing aid may have been put in the ear the wrong way. Take out the hearing aid and re-insert it.

  • How do I adjust the volume?

    Turn down volume to comfortable level. Adjust device volume on Keypad. Adjust Loop-Mic height.

  • What do I do about moisture?

    Hearing aid may have moisture inside it (dropped in sink or from sweat). Remove immediately.

  • What do I do with a weak or dead battery?

    Replace battery and safely dispose of old battery.

  • How do I insert a new battery?

    Match the “+” on the battery to the “+” on the battery compartment.

The In-The-Ear device fits the majority of ear canals but as each ear is different some clients may require custom fitting.

Masking and Dual Headsets

As the name implies this is a dual headset comprising of a single Mic, Left and Right in ear bud speaker system 2.5mm 4 pole plug (jack).

The Ear buds are interchangeable and is shipped with S M Large buds. These fit snugly into the ear canal, they occlude most of the surrounding noise and allow the masking tone to be most effective.

Ear Bud S M L Buds In the ear fitting Mic clip. The Mic is molded into the chord and comes with a clip to help secure the mic (to a shirt etc). You simply replace the existing mono head set with the custom dual units supplied.

The VoiceAmp VA601 device has a two sound channels Ambient Effect, this is a special system that allows normal sound to flow into the unit via the Mic and on to the headset thus preventing your normal hearing from being blocked when you are not speaking. This sound is natural and unmodified and adjusted by the ambient control in the USB console software.

The second channel is the masking sound itself (Effect). This is a low frequency sound (155Hz) that is very similar to the sound of the original Edinburgh Masker. The masking sound is factory set to be most effective masking frequency, this also masks the so called ‘conductive hearing’ that is conducted through the bones in the head and to the inner ear.

As the Voice amp device is totally programmable the frequency of the sounds can be adjusted as can the volume, and the trigger release level. TO do this you need to load up the USB console toll and plug in the device via USB.

VoiceAmp is the only manufacture of fluency devices that offers an advance masking program for people who stutter with blocks.

  • Simply attach both headsets to the device (one in the top one in the bottom)
  • Place the ear buds in the left and right ear.
  • Select the masking program (Program 4) from the keypad (two red flashes)
  • If you require additional masking for silent blocks use the centre button on the keypad to trigger then masking.
  • The masking will activate each time you begin to speak and stop automatically when you stop speaking.
  • The sensitivity can be pre set using the USB control panel software.

VA601i Improvements

As well as prolonging battery life and improving the total volume output, VoiceAmp had added two unique new features to its VA601i model, this applies to Firmware (the software o the device) Versions 14.xx and above.

  • Dynamic Pitch Sweep
  • This feature is now active on program 3 and improves sustainability of the AAF effect. The red program is designed for noisy environments and has high settings and suppresses background noise. Dynamic pitch is activated in this program giving 50Hz of sweep (1Hz per 10 sec) from the preset pitch level (Ver12.0.x or later).

  • Dynamic Masking

    You may be interested to hear the Edinburgh Masker is back. Some years ago VoiceAmp introduced a white noise masking tool on our device. Alan Falck then met Dr Dewar (husband of the original inventor, the late Ann Dewar (SLT)) in Edinburgh. He explained VoiceAmp could emulate his original Masking device with software. Dr Dewar gave VoiceAmp permission to use the Edinburgh Masker name, and we collected all the research files and tapes and handed them over to Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh.

    VoiceAmp has had many requests over the years to repair existing Edinburgh Maskers and we have even made some spares for people. We have now released the full Edinburgh masker software on our VA601i fluency device. There are improvements and a new control panel tool has been added for program 4, the masking program.

    An optional extra throat mic reduces about 95% of background noise; this makes triggering (turning masking on and off) usable in all environments. The masking feature can be evaluated using the existing two headsets provided, simply plug a headset into each socket (top and bottom) and select program 4 (two red fleshes ) using the > program selector from the keypad. The masking threshhold is pre set, each time you speak, masking will be activated, this can be adjusted using the new PC control panel tool (Ver 4.3 and above supports this feature).

    Flashes both red LED’s three times to indicate the forth program. The double red program is specially designed for masking. Tthis feature emulates the original Edinburgh Masker functionality. A throat mic can be used with this program to eliminate background noise, two headsets (one in each socket) can be used or Binaural (both ears) wireless receivers. Masking blocks out normal auditory feedback by producing a humming noise similar to conductive hearing. Note this program is not to be used while operating any machinery.
